    The Opportunity Plan: 5 Simple Solutions To Empower Women In The Workplace

    Today, women make up around 50% of the workforce, and families rely on women breadwinners more than ever before. Yet for decades Congress has failed to update federal policies to keep up with the needs of our changing families and workforce. If our economy AND families are going to thrive in the 21st Century, we must ensure we are giving a fair shot to half our workforce. That starts with empowering women with the tools and opportunities to achieve financial security for their families.

    1. Paid Family & Medical Leave

    Rebuilding America's middle class relies on keeping every woman who wants to work in the workforce and earning a paycheck. To help make this a reality, Senator Gillibrand will introduce The FAMILY Act, which would create a fully self-sustaining paid family and medical leave program that would provide financial security for our families at the moment they need it most.     Paid Family & Medical Leave will make it easier for new moms to have the time they need with their new babies without losing their job or financial security

    And through Senator Gillibrand’s FAMILY Act, paid leave can be implemented at the cost of approximately one cup of coffee per week

    2. Raise The Minimum Wage

    The American economy should be based on the fundamental principal of rewarding work. That is why we need the Fair Minimum Wage Act to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over three years. Learn more here.

    3. Universal Pre-K

    Not only will Universal Pre-K prepare our kids to succeed academically and professionally

    But it will also give working parents the flexibility to be able to contribute to their family's financial security

    4. Quality Affordable Childcare

    Under Senator Gillibrand's proposal, families would have the option to deduct the cost of child care expenses as a business expense. Her plan also includes an expanded Child and Dependent Care Credit, allowing low income families with little to no tax liability, to have access to a fully refundable tax credit to help mitigate the cost of child care.     Working mothers should not be left with the sole option of having to leave her job to take care of her kids at home

    Making quality child care affordable for every family will allow all working mothers to remain in the workforce and pursue professional advancement

    5. Equal Pay

    It is time for Congress to finally pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would follow through on the promise of the Equal Pay Act by closing loopholes that perpetuate wage discrimination, hold large corporations accountable for unjust wage practices, and treat women fairly for their work.
